Why Nonprofits Matter—and Why The Sandbox Exists
Nonprofits exist for one reason: to serve the community in ways that would not otherwise be possible. They step in where there are gaps—creating access, opportunity, and meaningful experiences for people of all ages. At The Sandbox Children’s Museum, that mission comes to life every day through play, learning, and connection.

For Executive Director Alicia Powell, nonprofit work has been her life’s purpose for nearly three decades.
“I have been in the nonprofit sector since 1996,” Alicia shares. Her career began at a children’s home raising funds to support a 60-bed facility. “Immediately, I knew I could make a difference in the lives of children and their families.” That calling led her to roles with hospital foundations, the Port Royal Sound Foundation, and The Salvation Army in Miami—always centered on service, compassion, and impact.
When Alicia returned to the Lowcountry, retirement felt like a possibility—until she discovered The Sandbox.
“The sound of children talking and giggling is the absolute best job in the entire world.”
At the time, The Sandbox was emerging from a difficult chapter. The Board entrusted Alicia with refurbishing exhibits, strengthening programs, and building a team that could move the museum forward. Today, the museum is a place where children learn through play and families create lasting memories together.
What many people don’t realize is that The Sandbox Children’s Museum is a nonprofit organization. Like most nonprofits, the museum does not exist to generate profit—it exists to serve. While ticket sales and memberships are important, they cover only 69% of the museum’s operating budget.

Fundraising is critical to the success of the museum.
Grants and private donations make it possible to offer new exhibits, meaningful programs, and—most importantly—access for families and children who need it most.
One of Alicia’s proudest initiatives is the museum’s Title I School Program, which allows students from Title I schools to visit the museum at no cost. During these visits, the museum closes to the public so students can fully experience the space.
“I knew I had to raise funds to cover the cost to the museum since we are closed to the public during that session,” Alicia explains. “Kids in these schools may never have a chance to experience the museum outside of these field trips.”
The impact is immediate and powerful. The exhibits are interactive and educational, and the joy on children’s faces makes it clear that these experiences matter.
“Giving kids access to the museum allows them to play to learn and learn to play,” Alicia says. “When I walk through the museum, I love watching kids play and interact with one another—and seeing parents and grandparents having just as much fun.”
For Alicia, nonprofit work is about creating opportunity, lifting up families, and investing in the future.
“Working in the nonprofit community allows me to touch lives in a positive way,” she shares. “Providing opportunities for families in need is one of my top priorities.”
The future of The Sandbox depends on continued community support. Every donation—no matter the size—helps ensure that children have access to enriching experiences that spark curiosity, creativity, and confidence.
“By giving to The Sandbox, you are helping prepare kids for their future,” Alicia says. “Each dollar truly makes an impact.”
In both her personal and professional life, philanthropy is central to who Alicia is.
“I cannot imagine being any place else. I am truly blessed.”
