When I began thinking about how to prepare my son River for school, I quickly realized that kindergarten readiness is about much more than letters and numbers. Confidence, independence, emotional regulation, and social skills all matter just as much. That’s why enrolling River in the D.I.G. (Discover, Imagine, Grow) Kindergarten Readiness Program at The Sandbox became one of the most important decisions our family made.

At the time, River was three years old and not yet in school. I was honestly struggling to find meaningful activities for him during the day. When my mom saw a post about the D.I.G. program on Facebook and sent it to me, it felt like a no-brainer. From the very first class, I knew we had found something special.

Growing Independence in a Supportive Space

Before starting D.I.G., River was very attached to us. He had limited experience around other children and almost no experience being away from his parents. Transitions were especially difficult for him. D.I.G. provided a gentle, structured environment where he could practice separation, routines, and social interaction—without feeling overwhelmed.

The instructors created a space where River felt safe to explore his independence at his own pace. Week by week, I watched his confidence grow.

Learning That Truly Sticks

One of the things that always amazed me was how much learning was packed into just one hour of D.I.G. classes. River once told me that preschool was his “playing school” and D.I.G. was his “learning school.” That distinction spoke volumes.

The program blended academic readiness with creativity, hands-on activities, and social-emotional learning. I truly believe the jumpstart River received through D.I.G. is a big reason why he is now doing so well academically in kindergarten.

A Smooth Transition Into School

When we eventually transitioned River into a three-day-a-week preschool program, it became clear just how impactful D.I.G. had been. He adjusted beautifully—and we knew it was because of the foundation he had built there. We did preschool on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, but River made sure we kept Tuesdays for D.I.G.

As one of the very first D.I.G. graduates, River experienced the program as his first step into his own little world. It was the gentle transition I had always dreamed of for him. Even today, he still has a core group of friends he originally met through D.I.G.

Supporting Parents Along the Way

D.I.G. didn’t just support River—it supported me as a parent. Through the program, I found my village. I met two of my best mom friends, and the relationships we formed continue to this day.

Miss Deb truly changed the trajectory of our story. Along with Miss Michelle, she gave me the confidence I needed to know that my child had the tools to succeed, even when I wasn’t around. Even two years after River finished D.I.G., I was able to go back to Miss Deb for guidance on choosing the best kindergarten fit for River’s learning style.

Because of D.I.G., our family became deeply connected to the Sandbox Museum. I became an annual pass holder, River attended Sandbox Camp three times, and the museum has remained a meaningful part of our lives.

Looking Ahead With Confidence

Next year, I’m excited to enroll my daughter Kenna in the D.I.G. program. Like her brother, she’s a creative, brilliant little soul—and she still struggles with separation. The difference this time is that I’m not nervous. I know Miss Deb, Miss Michelle and Miss Becky have it under control.

A Hidden Gem for Families

If you’re a parent feeling nervous about starting your child in a preschool or school setting, I truly encourage you to consider the D.I.G. program first. It is a hidden gem here on Hilton Head—especially for families who are looking not just for kindergarten readiness, but for support, community, and confidence during those early years.
